Poipu beach is the “Waikiki” of Kauai – popular, safe, accessible, and offers it all. There is some interesting sea life to be seen from the very endangered monk seals (and those who make sure you don’t harass them), honu (turtles), whales off shore when in season, and some nice snorkeling in the usually calm waters. It is in a prime resort area, so has all the facilities and shopping nearby that anyone could want. This resort side of the island is usually sunnier than other areas, and is an excellent spot for sun bathing and sunset watching. This is touristy, and there will be a crowd most days. But don’t let that scare you, as a crowd on Kauai would not be considered a crowd elsewhere – and usually everyone is in a terrific moood due to the beauty of the location. Like all the islands, winter time brings large and dangerous surf to the north side of the islands. During these winter months, Poipu and other south shore beaches can remain calm and perfect for those not comfortable with the challenging water sports sought by those exhilarated by the large winter surf of the north shore.
